Beyond the impending economic apocalypse, what kind of future awaits our children? What fairytales need to be written now to warn future generations against making the same mistakes as ours? Assuming 99% of our children are knife-wielding bezerker nihilists, one thing is for certain: the stories are going to have to be grim(m).
This is the starting point for Ross Sutherland’s one-man show. Having spent a year sharing an office with The Daily Mail, Sutherland finds himself stuck in a universe where his future has been already written. Buying a time capsule from Whitechapel Market ends up triggering a journey across the UK, in search of new fairytales, stories and poems that can be sent into the future to save mankind.
“Is this a performance poet with a comic’s stagecraft or a highly literate stand-up? Ross Sutherland’s one-man show is as slippery as an eel in its definition, and all the better for it. Hopelessly in love with language in the same way Daniel Kitson and Stewart Lee are, Sutherland’s show brought together home-made videos, diagrams and poetry readings… The Three Stigmata Of Pac-Man has the makings of a truly original, great show.”
– Brighton Argus
The Three Stigmata of Pacman playfully explores the cultural symbolism of tomorrow, where endless comparisons to Hitler have bankrupted the concept of evil, the art of poetry has been reduced to long descriptions of horses, and the only remaining mysteries in the universe occur in house parties you have just left.
